Rectoly for Mendeley

Rectoly is a paper reader for iPad that lets you read and annotate papers from your Mendeley library.

The official Mendeley mobile app was discontinued in March 2021. Since then, the only ways to read papers from your library on iPad have been to open them in a browser or download PDFs one by one and transfer them to another reader—a frustrating workflow that resulted in annotated copies and library copies becoming separate files.

When you sign into your Mendeley account with Rectoly, the app syncs your library to your device and opens papers in a reader designed for reading.

• Highlights, notes, and sticky notes sync bidirectionally with Mendeley, so your annotated copy and your library copy remain the same single file. Handwriting strokes only remain on the device because there's no mechanism in the Mendeley API to represent them (we're transparent about this limitation upfront).

This is not a reference management app. Your library stays in Mendeley, and Rectoly handles the "reading" side. Our concept is "read, not manage."

It's available as a free download with full features for 14 days, then $49.99 as a one-time purchase. There are no subscriptions.

The most time was spent on the design of annotation syncing. Annotations written offline are uploaded when reconnecting. When content differs between two devices or when too many annotations would disappear during sync, the app stops and asks for confirmation rather than silently resolving the issue.
