A researcher who has been storing literature in Mendeley faces the problem of not being able to read it on iPad.

Mendeley discontinued its official mobile app in March 2021. Since then, the only options are to open it in a browser or manually download PDFs one by one and open them in a separate reader. If you continue with the latter approach, the copy with annotations and the copy registered in the library become separate files. After a few months, you won't remember "which one did I write on."

Rectoly syncs the library to your device just by signing into your account, and writes back annotations made with Apple Pencil to the Mendeley side. You end up with just one copy.

Even five years after the official app was discontinued, no one had filled this gap.

Third-party apps do exist. However, the last update was in November 2019. That's more than a year before the official app was removed. In other words, since 2021, there has been a situation where no app has been continuously updated for this purpose.

It's not that there's no demand. Posts saying "iPad is my main device, so I'm in trouble" still remain on forums. People use it, but no one is making it. That was the gap.

I spent the most time making sure annotation syncing doesn't break.

Highlights, notes, and sticky notes sync bidirectionally with Mendeley.

On the other hand, handwriting with Apple Pencil does not sync. This is because Mendeley's API has no mechanism to represent handwriting strokes—it's a specification constraint with no workaround. I'm not hiding this; I've written about it on both the landing page and FAQ.

Another thing is not silently processing when something goes wrong. When content collides on two devices, when annotations are about to disappear more than expected—I don't automatically "resolve" it; I inform the user and stop. Since researchers' annotations can't be rewritten, I decided it's better to stop than to fail silently.

And finally, I decided not to replace the reference manager. The library stays in Mendeley. Rectoly only handles the reading side of things.

Mendeleyは2021年3月に公式モバイルアプリを終了しました。以降はブラウザで開くか、PDFを1本ずつ手でダウンロードして別のリーダーで
開くしかありません。後者を続けると、注釈を書き込んだコピーとライブラリに登録されているコピーが別ファイルになります。数ヶ月後には
「どっちに書いたか」が分からなくなる。

Rectolyはアカウントにサインインするだけでライブラリを端末に同期し、Apple Pencilで書いた注釈をMendeley側に書き戻します。コピーが
1つのままになります。

公式アプリが終了してから5年経っても、誰も埋めていなかったからです。

サードパーティのアプリは存在します。ただ最終更新が2019年11月で止まっていました。公式アプリが撤去されるより1年以上前です。つまり
2021年以降、この用途で更新され続けているアプリが1つも無い状態が続いていました。

需要が無いわけではありません。フォーラムには「iPadがメイン端末なので困っている」という投稿が今も残っています。使う人がいるのに、誰も作っていない。そういう空白でした。

注釈の同期を壊れないように作ることに、一番時間を使いました。

ハイライト・ノート・付箋はMendeleyと双方向に同期します。

一方でApple Pencilの手書きは同期しません。MendeleyのAPIに手書きストロークを表現する仕組みが無いためで、回避策のない仕様上の制約です。隠さずLPにもFAQにも書いています。

もう1つは、異常時に黙って処理しないことです。2台の端末で内容が衝突したとき、想定以上に注釈が消えようとしているとき——自動で「解決」せず、ユーザーに知らせて止まります。研究者の注釈は書き直しがきかないので、静かに間違えるより止まるほうがいいと判断しました。

あとは、リファレンスマネージャを置き換えないと決めたことです。ライブラリはMendeleyのまま。Rectolyは読む側の端だけを担当します。
