One morning, I casually opened a Discord notification and saw the name of a server I wasn't part of. A mutual friend told me that my app was apparently being discussed somewhere. At first, I didn't understand what was happening. I followed the link, scrolled up through the thread, and gradually the situation became clear. A stranger had posted "I was looking for something like this, and using this solved it" along with my app, and someone else had asked "Where did you find out about it?" I hadn't made any announcement. I hadn't asked anyone to share it. It was just there. I stared blankly at that screen for a while.
To go into more detail about that day, I didn't even know that Discord server existed. It seemed to be a community where individual developers gathered, a bit different from the circles I usually move in. Yet my app's name was mentioned there.
The person who introduced it might not have even been a user. Maybe they just tried it and liked it. But that person went out of their way to write "this is good" in the thread and paste the link. There were a couple of replies—"Oh, I didn't know about it" or "Let me try it out"—words like that strung together.
I didn't appear in that exchange at all. Only my app's name came up; no one seemed to care about the person who made it. For some reason, that felt really touching.
At first, I was about to jump into that thread and say "Thank you so much." But I stopped midway. Something felt off.
That place wasn't where I belonged. If the creator suddenly appeared and said "I was watching," it might feel creepy, like I was being monitored. Besides, the conversation was already over, already moving on. There was no need for me to jump in.
So in the end, I did nothing. I didn't tell anyone that I'd seen it or found out about it. I just quietly closed the tab. That was all.
When I first started indie development, I genuinely believed that "making it and delivering it to people is my job." Make it. Release it. Promote it. Introduce it. Get it to users. That's where my responsibility ends. After that, there's nothing I can do.
So I'd announce it on social media, add hashtags, and try to tell as many people as possible "it exists." If it still didn't reach people, I thought it was either a problem with my ability to communicate or a lack of appeal in the app itself.
It was especially tough right after release. If there was no response the day after I published it, I'd think "Did I fail?" Is it because I have few followers that it doesn't reach people? Is it because my writing is bad? Or is there just no demand? I'd go in circles thinking about it, then refine my announcement again, then obsess over the numbers.
That went on for about half a year, and at some point I finally realized: I was exhausted because I was putting all my effort into "delivering it." The proportion of time spent making things went down, and the cost of communicating just kept increasing.
From that point on, I changed my approach slightly—I kept announcements to a minimum and focused on updates and improvements instead. I decided to have a little more faith in whether or not it was reaching someone.
I knew the word "word of mouth." But honestly, I couldn't imagine it happening with my app. I thought word of mouth was something bigger. Reviews piling up, ratings going up, getting featured in some curation, that kind of thing.
But what actually happened was much more mundane. Someone tells someone else "this is good." That's it. No screenshots, no detailed reviews, no roundup articles. Just one line: "Using it solved my problem" with a link. That's all it took for someone else to find out about it.
That smallness was actually what made it feel real and a bit scary. It wasn't something orchestrated to be promoted; it was moving purely on the motivation of "it was helpful, so I told someone." I was outside that chain, doing nothing.
I'd never witnessed a moment like that before. In the cycle of making something, trying to deliver it, and checking the results, you can't see things like this. Even if something is quietly happening somewhere, it doesn't reach me. That day, I just happened to see that "outside."
Thinking back to that thread, the person who introduced it didn't say much. Something like "this solved it" and "here's the link"—just a short sentence. But that brevity felt like it had no unnecessary elements.
When I introduce my own app, I tend to write a lot. I explain the background, explain the features, write about what kind of people it's suited for. I guess I want people to believe in it, so I end up saying too much. But that person's introduction had no such strain. There was just "I liked it," and that was all.
I understood intellectually that an app stops being mine the moment I release it. But I didn't really feel that emotionally until I saw that thread.
It was introduced in a place I didn't introduce it, by someone I didn't know, in a conversation I wasn't part of, and it was spreading a little. The app was there, but I wasn't. It wasn't so much sad as it was... how do I put it... "Ah, it really did go out into the world," is what I felt.
It might be similar to raising a child or publishing a work. It's not that I don't want to let go. But there's definitely a moment when you feel it slipping away.
My behavior didn't drastically change after that day. It's not like I had some dramatic realization and overhauled my approach. Just a few small things changed.
One thing is that I stopped looking only at numbers to check if it was being used. Instead of install counts or page views, I started occasionally searching for my app name on social media. Most days nothing comes up. But sometimes something does. That feels much more real than numbers.
Another thing is that I shortened the announcements I make after releasing something. Where I used to write long explanations, now I write something like "you can use this in these situations, here's the link." I think of it as keeping it in a form that's easy to copy and share when someone wants to tell others about it.
I can't quite put it into words, but from that experience, I got a sense that "maintaining a proper presence" might be more important than "working hard to deliver it."
There's a distance that my desperate attempts to deliver can't cross. But when someone thinks "I want to tell people about this," if the link exists, if it works, if it's there, then that person will deliver it for me. Maybe my job is just to keep the app running for that moment.
If I'm being grandiose about it, that's what it comes down to. But what I actually do is mundane. Check that it's not broken. Fix the parts that are hard to use. Update it. That's all.
In the end, that's all there is to that day's story. I found out that someone was spreading my app. I did nothing. My way of thinking changed just a little.
Indie development has slow feedback. You make something, release it, get no response, make something else, and repeat. In that cycle, there's quite a long stretch of time where you wonder "Is this really helping anyone?" What I felt in that moment was like an answer to that anxiety. It was reaching people. It was being used somewhere I didn't know about.
Maybe your app is also being talked about somewhere you don't know about right now. Maybe someone is saying "this is good" in a conversation you're not part of.
There's not much way to confirm that. You might happen to find out one day, or you might never know. But not knowing about something and it not happening are different things.
If your app is working properly, usable, and helping someone, then it's already out in the world. After that, all you need to do is think about making the next thing.
That's what I thought, and I decided to start making things again.
