I'm Lily, and development is my hobby. The other day, I made an app I had released private. I have no team. When I released it and when I ended it, I was alone. There was no one to say "congratulations" to me, and no one to offer words of sympathy. There was no announcement channel on Slack—I just pressed a button in the admin panel, and that was it. That silence struck my heart more than I expected. Precisely because it wasn't noisy, I only realized after it ended how much of my heart I had poured into that app. I'd like to write about that today.
The trigger was small. When I felt a small inconvenience in my daily life, I thought, "Wouldn't it be convenient if I made this into an app?"
If you're doing personal development, I think you understand this feeling. That moment when you find a problem, come up with a solution, and realize you could build it yourself—that light sense of exhilaration. The feeling of writing out a list of features in a notebook in the middle of the night and not being able to sleep while thinking about what the screens should look like.
I loved that feeling, so I spent my weekends completing the first version. The design and features were rough around the edges, but the sense of accomplishment from "creating something I wanted for myself" was real.
On the day I finished and released it, I gave myself a small fist pump alone. But the internet didn't know about it. I posted on X and got a few likes, and that was it.
While thinking "well, that's about right," somewhere deep down I believed "surely this will gradually spread from here." The baseless conviction that what I made would help someone. This was my first misconception.
About three months after release, I opened the analytics dashboard less frequently. At first I checked it every day, then once a week, then once every two weeks, and eventually I became afraid to open it at all.
Numbers are honest. The number of users using it daily was in the single digits. The percentage of people who came back after using it once was nearly zero. "They installed it, but they're not continuing to use it"—that reality was there.
I thought that if I didn't look at the numbers, I could escape reality, or maybe I was just turning away from something I didn't want to see. Looking back now, I think both were true, and both were forms of escape.
When users don't increase, the first thing an indie developer thinks is "maybe I'm not promoting it enough." I was no exception.
I increased my posts on X. I wrote development logs on note. I even showed up at indie developer communities. But the numbers barely moved. Installation numbers would increase temporarily on the days I promoted it, then drop right back. That was the pattern.
When I started thinking "is it the product or the promotion that's the problem?" both seemed bad, and I didn't know which to tackle first.
The most painful part was not being able to decide when to shut it down.
"Maybe if I add one more feature it will change." "Maybe if I improve notifications they'll come back." "Maybe if I polish the interface the retention rate will go up."—Every month I found a reason to continue with "just a little longer."
But looking back now, that wasn't enthusiasm for improvement—it was fear of ending. Not setting a stopping criterion from the beginning slowly wore me down.
There was another thing that made me hesitant to end it: the feeling of "waste."
The time it took to make, the sleepless nights of struggle, the sense of accomplishment when I released it, the fact that I'd come this far. It felt like all of that would become nothing, so I couldn't bring myself to say I was quitting.
In indie development, the time invested is greater than the money invested, so the curse of "I've come this far" sinks in quietly and deeply. That feeling can become energy to move forward, but it can also become an engine to keep moving in the wrong direction. In my case, it was the latter.
The decision to end it wasn't made on a special day. One evening after work, I opened my PC and was looking at the dashboard as usual, when I suddenly thought, "I can no longer explain to myself why I should continue this."
It wasn't that I'd run out of improvement ideas. I wasn't stuck technically. It was just that when I was honest with myself, I realized the answer to the question "Can I still be serious about this product?" was no.
It took me six months to accept that.
When I pressed the "make private" button in the admin panel, a confirmation dialog appeared, I pressed it again, and that was it.
No one was notified. It didn't appear anywhere. The app simply disappeared from search results, the public page became hidden, and the curtain quietly closed.
This silence was unexpected. I thought I would feel something more, but I just sat there blankly for a while, then went to make coffee. I didn't cry, I didn't feel relieved—it was just quiet.
A few days after making it private, my feelings gradually became clearer. In that process, I realized something.
I had loved that app.
Even though few users continued using it, even though the numbers didn't grow, I still thought of that app as "good." Even after ending it, there are moments when I think back, "Ah, that part wasn't bad."
This isn't attachment or lingering regret—it's "affection for something I created." In indie development, the maker's commitment and judgment are directly embedded. That's why ending it feels like denying myself.
But affection for the app and the rightness of continuing it were separate matters.
What scared me most was, "If I quit, maybe I won't want to create anymore."
But actually quitting, I realized that fear was unfounded. A week after making it private, I felt the desire to create something again. I came up with a new idea and started making a small prototype.
The desire to "create" wasn't tied to that specific product—it was something that had always been inside me. Ending one thing didn't erase it.
When I make the next product, I plan to decide first "when will I end this?"
Specifically, criteria like: if there are fewer than 10 daily users for three consecutive months, I'll reconsider; if the percentage of people who return two weeks after first use drops below 15%, I'll pause. Numbers are just guidelines, not absolute, but I think "giving myself the right to quit beforehand" will protect the pure motivation to continue.
Rather than continuing while feeling fear of ending, it's better to prepare the conditions for quitting in advance and then create with full commitment until then. That way, the time spent creating feels richer.
Most people who do indie development start because they want to create. At least I did.
But actually finishing one project, I came to think "release isn't the completion—ending it is part of one complete project."
I started alone, continued alone, and ended alone. If there were a team, I could share the emotions with someone, but in indie development I carry it all myself. That weight is real. But at the same time, there's the freedom to make that weight entirely my own.
That day, the hand that pressed the private button was truly my hand. I'm proud of that much.
I'm creating something again now. I don't know if it will succeed. But this time, I plan to decide everything myself, including the ending.
If this becomes a reference for someone else doing indie development, I'd be happy.
