I still remember the night I released the app clearly. From the moment I posted on social media, I was checking notifications every 30 minutes, and my heart raced with each reply. I was so happy that I'd even take screenshots of small comments and save them to a folder. "I finally released it," "Someone received it"—the excitement I felt at that moment was truly real. I thought it was the pure joy of creating something.
But about half a year later, I noticed something. Even though I was the one who sent the app out into the world, I wasn't using it at all myself. I'd check the developer dashboard every day, but as a user, I almost never opened my own app anymore. Even though I was the one who set up notifications, I barely opened them when they came in. I felt a bit embarrassed and sad.
This is a story about how, during that period, I added just one small feature for myself alone, and fell in love with the app again. No one asked me to do it, and it didn't improve any metrics. It was just a feature that "I wanted to use"—and that alone quietly brought back the passion that had been cooling. I'm writing this hoping it reaches even a few people who feel the same way.
Honestly, the first three months after release were so much fun to develop. I'd release some kind of update every week, get feedback, and fix things. The feeling of "growing it together with users" felt so good. My commit logs were full of weekly updates, and just seeing them made me feel reassured that "I'm doing this properly."
But around the fourth month, the pace gradually started to slow. Excuses like "I was busy this week" and "next week for sure" started piling up, and before I knew it, two or three weeks would pass without commits. From the outside, it might have looked like "I'm maintaining it properly." But inside, the fuel was already running out.
As my passion cooled, I noticed something else. When thinking of feature ideas, I'd somehow started thinking along the lines of "would adding this increase reviews?" or "would this feature look good in the App Store screenshots?"
Instead of asking "would I use this?", I'd gotten into the habit of asking "would this resonate with someone?" That's not inherently bad, but I realized I'd become "someone implementing things without knowing if they'd resonate with anyone." It felt like just checking off a to-do list. The word "obligation" fit perfectly.
The turning point came one day with a DM.
"I was using it every day for three weeks, but recently it's become a hassle to open it... I wondered why, so I stopped using it, and honestly it felt easier. It's a strange feeling."
It wasn't criticism. Rather, it was an honest message of confusion—"I was using it because I liked it, but somehow I drifted away." At first, I panicked thinking "I need to improve this." I started running through ideas in my head: was it a UX problem? Was the flow bad?
But as I read it over several times, something else caught my attention.
——"Wait, haven't I been feeling like it's a hassle to use my own app recently too?"
When that question surfaced, I almost laughed. That user who'd used it every day for three weeks might have been in a better place than me—I'd been in "hassle mode" for much longer.
After that DM, I decided to slightly change how I approached development. Instead of asking "will this resonate with this user?" first, I'd ask myself "do I want to use this right now?" first—a small shift. It wasn't a major strategic change. I just rearranged the order of my questions. But later, I'd realize how important that order was.
A little while later, a small idea came to me.
After using the app, if there was a space where I could leave just one word about "what kind of mood I was in today," I'd definitely use it. An emoji would be fine, or a single sentence. Not something to show anyone else, but a place to keep a record just for myself.
It wasn't a request from users or an idea I'd seen on social media. It was purely personal—"I want this."
The night I implemented that feature, I felt that "I'm having so much fun I can't stop" feeling for the first time in a while. Since I wasn't rushing for anyone else, I could obsess over the details. For the first time in a while, I could prioritize that feeling of "this would feel better this way." I spent time on those "unrequested micro-adjustments"—tweaking font sizes, adjusting the padding in input fields—and I remembered how much fun that could be.
The next morning, when I used the feature I'd implemented, I couldn't help but say "this is nice." That made me so happy. Before waiting for anyone's review, I used it myself and felt good. The user count hadn't changed. The metrics weren't moving. But the feeling of loving the app had definitely come back.
From that experience, I realized that if you keep creating without asking "do I want to use this?", at some point you become the biggest stranger to your own work.
As a creator, "having a user perspective" is important. But when it goes too far, your own sense of things becomes dull. If you put "what do I think?" too far back, it becomes hard to see the difference between "creating something good for someone" and "creating something that seems good for someone."
I'm writing this as a reminder to myself. It's not about stopping thinking about users—it's about making sure to keep "what do I think?" as one of your axes.
Recently, when I think of new features, I try to answer "would I be happy using this this week?" first. If the answer is "well, it'd be convenient," I hold off a bit. If it's "I'd definitely use it," I move forward. It's just a simple filter, but it's changed the energy of development significantly. I'm not judging every feature by that rule, but at least I've made "my own sense" one of my axes. Just that alone has turned work from obligation back into something I enjoy.
To be honest, I still think about that user who sent me that DM sometimes. There's been no follow-up message from them, and there's nothing I can confirm in the app. I don't know if they're using it again or if they've moved on to something completely different.
But if that message hadn't arrived, I think it would have taken me much longer to notice my own "hassle." The words "I was using it every day for three weeks but drifted away" became the trigger for me to realize "maybe something similar was happening to me." Someone else's honesty pulled out my own honesty.
Losing passion for an app might not be a bad thing in itself. But I think it's a bit scary when your sense of "do I want to use this?" starts to fade. That's because it feels like the main fuel for creation is running out.
The small feature I added that night is still quietly working in the app. I don't really care how many users are using it. At least I use it almost every day. I think that's enough now.
I think personal development needs something that can keep you going even without anyone's praise. User feedback is of course wonderful. But I think the real feeling of "I used this and it was good" becomes the power to keep going long-term.
If you're feeling like your passion for your own app has cooled a bit right now, try asking yourself just once: "what feature do I want to use right now?" Not for users, not for the market—just for yourself. That might become the trigger to fall in love again. At least, it was for me.
