CharmCam started as a lightweight camera app for young people who could use it without worrying about camera knowledge.
The core idea was not to do detailed editing after taking a photo, but to look naturally polished from the moment you press the shutter.
We built features to detect face position, smooth skin, and subtly adjust contours and eyes. We even created processing that reflects these changes in real-time on the camera feed. There were sliders to adjust strength and presets too.
It worked.
Beauty filters don't have a clear right answer.
A strength that looks natural on one face suddenly becomes unnatural on another. When brightness or angle changes, the boundary between skin and background becomes noticeable. Moving the contour can make hair and background outside the face sway too.
Every time we fixed something, we had to verify it under different conditions. Adding more options increased flexibility, but it also meant passing judgment to the user.
What we were aiming for wasn't a camera with many settings screens, but one you could open without thinking and just shoot.
So we removed the beauty filter entry point from the first public version.
We didn't delete all the code. We kept the face detection and processing code, but didn't activate it in the public version. Instead, we first finished it to the point where it worked fine as a regular camera.
Photos and videos, front and rear cameras, tap to focus, flash, timer, composition grid, zoom. We included a small window to shoot both cameras simultaneously, and quick access from the lock screen and Camera Controls.
We didn't add specialized features like manual exposure or RAW. We completed the ability to shoot without confusion first, and CharmCam went to the App Store.
By removing the beauty filter, we don't think CharmCam is complete.
We still believe that a feature to automatically look naturally polished is necessary as a reason for young people to choose it over the standard camera. But rather than releasing that unfinished, we prioritized making it work as a camera people use every day.
When we bring back the beauty filter next, we don't want it to be a row of many sliders. The app side should choose a natural strength based on the person and situation. The user just sees what they want to shoot.
Removing a feature doesn't mean abandoning direction. With CharmCam, we changed the order of release to protect what we wanted to create.

一つ直すたびに別の条件で確かめる必要がありました。項目を増やせば自由度は上がりますが、使う人へ判断を渡すことにもなります。
目指していたのは設定画面の多いカメラではなく、何も考えずに開いて撮れるカメラでした。
そこで、最初の公開版から美顔の入口を外しました。
コードを全部消したわけではありません。顔検出や加工の処理は残しながら、公開版では動かさない。その代わり、まず普通のカメラとして困らないところまで仕上げました。
写真と動画、前後カメラ、タップフォーカス、フラッシュ、タイマー、構図グリッド、ズーム。前後のカメラを同時に写す小窓や、ロック画面とCamera Controlからすぐ撮る入口も入れました。
マニュアル露出やRAWのような専門機能は増やしていません。迷わず撮れることを先に完成させて、CharmCamはApp Storeへ出ました。
美顔を外したことで、CharmCamが完成したとは思っていません。
若い人が標準カメラの代わりに選ぶ理由として、自動で自然に整う機能は今も必要だと思っています。ただ、それを未完成のまま表へ出すより、毎日使うカメラとして成立させるほうを先にしました。
次に美顔を戻すなら、たくさんのスライダーを並べる形にはしたくありません。人や場面に合わせて、アプリ側が自然な強さを選ぶ。使う人は撮りたいものだけを見る。
機能を外すことは、方向を捨てることとは限りません。CharmCamでは、作りたいものを守るために、公開する順番を変えました。
