【OSS】I was able to contribute by adding Japanese to Unsloth Studio【Happy】 | Tsukutta

Introduction

My pull request to OSS (Open Source Software) has been merged for the first time.

This was my second experience sending a pull request, but this time I was able to contribute by adding Japanese locale support to Unsloth Studio, an OSS that allows fine-tuning and inference of local LLMs.

What I Did

This is the conventional route. However, this time my PC storage was tight, so git clone and I completed everything on GitHub in the browser instead.

Beforehand, I searched the official GitHub repository for i18n and other terms to understand the language display UI sections

I searched Issues and Pull Requests japanese to confirm that no one had done this before

Forked the repository

Using the recently added Gemini in Chrome feature, I understood the actual code together with Gemini, and generated a Japanese translation once using Gemini's Pro mode

I verified it myself and made corrections as needed for any missing translations

Submitted the pull request

A bot pointed out missing translations and omissions in the code that loads the translation file, which I fixed immediately (this went back and forth a few times)

A few days later, the maintainer said "there are some hardcoded parts that aren't being translated, so either fix that or change the pull request title," so I modified the title

CI passed and it was merged.

Thoughts on Completing This

In the past, I had sent a pull request to Gemini CLI, an official Google OSS, but at that time it was marked p1 (highest priority) but was never seen by anyone, and after a bot message saying "we're closing this because it doesn't have help wanted," it was closed. Because of that bitter experience, I was genuinely happy about this outcome. I still can't believe my name is listed among the Contributors.

Unsloth is a major name that anyone who has worked with local LLMs has seen at least once. It's a large-scale project, and being able to contribute to it, even in the form of translation, made me feel extremely proud.

I'm not sure if I'll send pull requests to other OSS projects in the future, but I hope to continue contributing with this experience as my foundation.

Also, the fact that I was able to complete everything in the browser is honestly interesting. If you're using Chrome, I think you'll see something in the top right, so please try it out. I hope for the continued development of OSS culture.

はじめに

初めてOSS（オープンソースソフトウェア）へのプルリクエスト（変更願い）がマージ（合流）されました。

プルリクエストを送った経験は人生で2回目だったのですが、今回、Unsloth Studioという、ローカルLLMのファインチューニングや推論を行うことができるOSSの日本語ロケール追加で貢献することができました。

やったこと

いわゆる王道のルートです。ですが今回はPC容量がカツカツなのgit cloneはせず、全部ブラウザのGitHub上で済ませました。

1. 事前に、公式のGitHubリポジトリでi18nなどと検索し、言語の表示UI部分を把握

2. IssuesやPull Requestsjapaneseと検索し、過去に誰もやっていなかったことを確認

3. リポジトリをフォーク

4. 最近追加されたGemini in Chrome機能で実際のコードをGeminiと一緒に把握し、GeminiのProモードで一度日本語訳を生成

5. 自分自身でも確認し、翻訳漏れなどがあれば適宜修正

6. プルリクエストを送信

7. botによって翻訳漏れや翻訳ファイルを読み込ませるコードへの追記漏れといった点を指摘されすぐに修正（ここは何往復かありました）

8. 数日後、メンテナから「一部ハードコードされていて翻訳されていない部分があるからどうにかするか、あるいはプルリクエストの表題を変えてほしい」と来たので表題修正

9. CIなども通り、マージされました。

完走した感想

過去にはGemini CLIというGoogle公式のOSSにプルリクエストを送ったことがあったのですが、その時はp1（最重要）が付きましたが中の人間に一切見られることなく、「help wantedがついてないから閉じるね」のbotのメッセージの後、閉じられました。その苦い経験があったので今回の件は素直に嬉しかったです。Contributorsの中に自分の名前が載っているのが正直信じられません。

Unslothは、ローカルLLMに触れたことがあるなら一度は見る名前のいわば大手です。規模も大きく、そこに翻訳という形ですが貢献できたことは非常に誇らしい気持ちになりました。

またどこかのOSSにプルリクエストを送ることがあるかはわかりませんが、この経験を糧にこれからも貢献できていければと思います。

あと、全部ブラウザで済んでしまったのが正直面白いです。皆さんもChromeを使っているなら右上になにかがいると思うので、ぜひ使ってみてください。今後のOSS文化の益々の発展を願っています。
