What we wanted to create was a living room in a share house.
You can stay in your own room. Your privacy isn't disturbed. But the living room has everyone's presence, information flows in, and you can join whenever you feel like it.
"SQUAD" is that world turned into an app.
You open the app and close it without writing anything. I think many people can relate.
It's not that there's nothing to write about. It's just that reasons for not being able to write have accumulated without us noticing. And those reasons differ depending on which app you're using.
Each one is a small hesitation. But when they pile up, people go silent.
SQUAD is an app that removes all these "factors that prevent posting," one by one.
While the posters have been silent, the viewers are also exhausted.
The term "SNS fatigue" was born because SNS has become a tool that sucks up time. The mechanism of interesting posts flowing endlessly is said to be similar to gambling—pulling the lever until you hit the jackpot. Around the world, there's even debate about whether minors should be allowed to use it.
Friends' posts aren't displayed, and information from strangers just flows endlessly. The timeline is no longer a place to connect with friends.
SQUAD doesn't send notifications. Even if you write, you don't stop anyone's hand, and you don't burden anyone with "I have to reply."
So "good morning" is fine, and "I'm tired" is fine. You can leave trivial things as trivial.
SQUAD is not a shared chat room like a LINE group.
In group chats, everyone sees the same screen. That's why silence is visible to everyone.
SQUAD is different. If I'm connected to A, B, C, and D, and A is connected to B, C, E, and F, then my list of speech bubbles and A's list of speech bubbles have different people lined up in the first place. Not everyone is in the same room—each person has their own list.
So even if you write "eating at a family restaurant in front of the station," it's not a call-out in a public place. Only people interested will reach out in a 1-on-1 chat.
If no one comes, it's not "being ignored in front of a crowd." The pain of rejection and the shame of being ignored can't happen by design.
SQUAD has no likes. We're not "hiding" them—they don't exist from the start.
So posts don't get scored. You're not compared to someone else's post, and the result of "0 likes" never happens.
If people want to react, they reach out directly in a 1-on-1 chat. Reaction isn't a number—it's conversation. That's all SQUAD has.
Instead of a flowing timeline, everyone is displayed as a list of speech bubbles. People don't get buried by someone who posts a lot.
We only show "now." The past doesn't remain. So there's no fear of it being dug up later. If you want to keep a post in your history, do it on X.
You only connect with people you're really close to. Strangers can't see it.
You can't attach photos. There's no need to dress things up. If you want to dress things up, do it on Instagram.
In 10 seconds, you can grasp everyone's "now." Just open it casually and leave your current moment. It doesn't steal your time.
The prototype of this idea is actually quite old. Before smartphones and LINE, when everyone was holding i-mode phones.
Even if you thought "I want to eat dinner with someone on the way home today," all you could do was send emails one by one. It's awkward to be turned down, and deciding the order to invite people is a hassle. I always wished there was a tool to tell all my friends "kind of" without being direct.
The other root is Zenly, which has now shut down.
Zenly was an app where you shared location information with friends. The often-discussed appeal is that "meeting up becomes easier," but I don't think that's the essence. The real appeal was being able to see the "now" of people you're really close to. The night before an exam, if everyone's location was at home, you'd think "they're still up studying," and you could sit at your desk too. That was the experience.
But I was always scared of sharing location information. So in SQUAD, we changed what you share to text. Location is scary, but writing one line about "what I'm doing now" isn't scary.
Your privacy isn't disturbed. But everyone's presence comes in. You can join anytime, or you don't have to.
I'd be happy if close friends and drinking buddies used it that way.
If you have ideas like "this could be used this way," please let me know.
And right now, we're recruiting a marketing team. If you have marketing expertise and want to help spread this vision together, please reach out.
