Hello. Thank you for playing the 500 Million Year Button Game.
I'm Chris, the developer. Fortunately, many people have been playing it on the tsukutta site, so I'd like to share, as a personal record, how I designed and developed it—though it will be brief.
I had never done game development before, but after encountering Claude Code, I thought I'd like to try making a game.
I've always liked Cookie Clicker, and I was vaguely brainstorming ideas for some kind of incremental game when I had a sudden inspiration: what if I could turn what happens after pressing the "500 Million Year Button" into a game?
I'd love to explain how I developed the idea, but once you've thought of something, there's no helping it. It was like Archimedes receiving the revelation of "Eureka."
I want to create an inflation-type game inspired by the 500 Million Year Button, where you consume time. I'd like to consult with you about the design, plan, and direction.
Rather than jumping straight into making a game, I first have a conversation with Claude (chat) to expand the direction and ideas.
Many story elements and mechanics came to mind through this discussion.
I want time itself to be the currency. By consuming time, you gradually become capable of more advanced things. Eventually you build a civilization, become a god yourself, and clear the game by passing the 500 Million Year Button you created to someone else.
That was the only image I had in my mind.
But with just this information, Claude proposed the basic flow of the game.
Phase 0: The Void
Consciousness only. What you can do is roughly "count," "think," "imagine." Cost is in seconds and minutes. The part where you feel the original work's motif most strongly.
Phase 1: Creation of Self
Build a body and senses. Cost is in years.
Phase 2: Creation of the World
Assemble land, sky, light, and water. Thousands to tens of thousands of years.
Phase 3: Life
Microorganisms → plants → animals → ecosystems. Millions of years.
Phase 4: Intelligence
Bring forth humanity (or a human-like existence). Tens of millions of years.
Phase 5: Civilization
Civilization develops automatically. The player observes and interferes as a god. This is where the idle game elements are most effective.
Phase 6: Deification
Gather faith to acquire godhood. Accumulate divine power.
Phase 7: Button Creation
Create the 500 Million Year Button using the civilization's knowledge and divine power. Here comes the realization of "me too..."
Phase 8: Succession
Pass it to someone and clear.
Though we made adjustments later, this clarified the flow to completion.
I want the ending to have choices, and I want to incorporate a legacy system that becomes a bonus in the second playthrough. The image is buying abilities with the 500 million yen you've obtained.
With the ending in sight, I was able to unearth the idea of implementing a legacy system. Brainstorming with AI is fast-paced and really grasps my intentions, so it feels like talking to a really competent editor.
The ending and legacy are good. Referencing Cookie Clicker and other inflation games, you need to think of actions and devices (items) that really accelerate inflation. Also, how to express those visually and such.
It's almost a complete pass-off, but they respond to this unreasonable request without a single complaint.
Phase 0: Possibility Space
Phase 1: Matter Generation
Phase 2: Environment Building
Phase 3: Life
Phase 4: Intelligence
Phase 5: Civilization
Phase 6: Deification
Phase 7: Button Creation
Prepare 5-7 devices per phase, about 40 devices total. It's recommended to release the MVP with Phases 0-2 (about 15 devices) and see the reaction.
After consulting on content and design direction in this way, when I finally moved to implementation and gave instructions to Claude Code, they said:
What I'd actually like to propose is this: The fastest way is for me to directly create a Phase 0 prototype right here in this chat. Specifically: 1. Generate an HTML file that runs in this thread (using create_file tool) 2. Download it and open it in your browser 3. Try it out and give feedback like "the numbers feel off" or "the visuals should be a bit different" 4. Do 2-3 iterations here to solidify the MVP form 5. After that, continue development (Phase 1 onwards) on Claude Code on your machine With this approach, you can get to the initial hands-on check in about 30 minutes. It's more efficient to move to Claude Code "after the foundation is built" because you can give detailed instructions with the full picture in mind.
So I had them create the MVP (prototype) in the chat as suggested.
To my surprise, it was almost already in finished form.
I thought we'd won at that point, but from here on it was long...
Adjusting clear times (items), fine-tuning expressions and design, implementing foreign language versions, implementing the opening, checking effects, confirming smartphone design...
In any case, the goal was to perfect the Phase 0 screen first before moving on to subsequent development.
Why? Because Claude Code has a convenient feature called sub-agents, which allows you to develop Phases 1-7 in parallel.
After all that, I somehow managed to create a Phase 0 screen I was satisfied with, and as planned, the sub-agents immediately created all the subsequent Phases. This was the most satisfying part. The sensation of leveraging AI becomes addictive.
However, due to poor instructions, the specifications weren't unified, and the integration work later was brutally tedious...
What I'm proud of is the opening—when you select a greeting, you can immediately choose a language. Furthermore, it ends with a button-pressing screen, so you get a natural flow straight into the game where you're also pressing buttons! This kind of attention to detail might be the key to making a game good.
After all that, developing night after night, struggling for nearly a month.
I finally reached a finished product. The prototype was completed in a few hours, but finishing it as a complete work was incredibly difficult.
Since I'd gone through the trouble of making this game, I wanted as many people as possible to play it! So I consulted with Claude again, and they told me to publish it on Reddit and itch—sites I didn't even know about.
Following their instructions, I created accounts and posted on Reddit (a major overseas bulletin board) and itch. I don't understand English at all, but they handled everything from translation onwards, which was a huge help.
Since we'd discussed the game's concept beforehand, they created descriptions and such with full understanding of all the nuances. Honestly, I couldn't have done anything without AI...
On Reddit, I got roasted with "AI garbage game!" and such, but on itch it was well-received, with nearly 4,000 people playing it. Especially those who commented early on reported lots of bugs, but they still left warm comments, which was really encouraging. I was moved by how global games are.
In parallel, I posted on my X account and tsukutta as well, and thankfully it's showing up in the top rankings. I enjoy watching the display of "◯ people have played this" increase day by day.
I plan to continue making and releasing games, so I'd be happy if you'd give them a try. Thank you for sticking with me this far.
Phase 0:
Phase 1:
Phase 2:
Phase 3:
Phase 4:
Phase 5:
Phase 6:
Phase 7:
Phase 8:
Phase 0:
Phase 1:
Phase 2:
Phase 3: 生命
Phase 4: 知性
Phase 5: 文明
Phase 6: 神化
Phase 7:
