What We Wanted to Solve

When you work as a freelancer or solo business owner doing creative work, there are moments when you find yourself chased by "operational" time rather than "creation" time.

Creating estimates, sending invoices, confirming payments, organizing client information, tracking revenue and outstanding receivables, tallying expenses and fixed costs, preparing for tax filing——. What you really want to do is production work, but administrative tasks and numerical management gradually steal your time and energy.

What makes it worse is that you can't see at a glance "how your business is actually doing right now." How many projects are in motion, how much is expected to come in this month, how much is uncollected, how close you are to your goals. To find out, you have to go back and forth between spreadsheets, notes, calendars, and accounting software——I wanted to eliminate this very effort of "checking multiple places."

Why We Built It

I myself am a freelance video producer and was directly facing this exact problem.

At night and on days off, I'd spend time not on production but on creating invoices and updating my homemade spreadsheets. Accounting software is strong on accounting but can't manage projects, Notion is too free-form and the workflow doesn't stick. In the end, no tool was actually built for "a creator running a company alone."

So I thought: why not build the tool I've always wanted myself——that's where Compass started.

Another push came from AI. In an era where tedious input and drafting can be handled by AI, if I can just say "create tasks for this project" or "add this company as a client," I can reclaim the time that was being stolen by administrative work and put it back into production. That sense of possibility became the reason to keep developing.

What We Focused On

Being able to complete everything solo. We prioritized making it usable from the day you sign up.
Numbers visible in a form that informs "decisions." Not just recording data, but understanding this month's revenue, outstanding receivables, goal achievement rate, and expected payments the moment you open the dashboard. We aimed for a dashboard that lets you decide your next move.
Being able to leave tedious work to AI. Just talk to Cockpit and tasks, projects, and document drafts are complete. We didn't want you wasting time on unfamiliar tool operations.
Standing alongside creators' actual work. Project categories, portfolio publishing, the real-world feel of video, photo, and design work. We valued the details that general-purpose tools can't capture.
Being able to safely entrust important information. Client information and revenue data are a freelancer's lifeline. We designed with security as the top priority.

Compass is a tool for "people who want to focus on creating." By reducing the time you're chased by administrative work and numbers, even a little, we want to be a companion (compass) that lets you face the work you really want to do.

解決したかったこと

フリーランスやひとり法人でクリエイティブの仕事をしていると、"作る"時間より"回す"時間に追われる瞬間がよくあります。

見積書をつくり、請求書を送り、入金を確認し、顧客情報を整理し、売上と未収金を把握し、経費や固定費を集計し、確定申告に備える——。本来やりたいのは制作なのに、事務作業と数字の管理が、じわじわと時間と気力を奪っていきます。

しかも厄介なのが、「今、自分のビジネスがどうなっているのか」が一目で分からないこと。案件はいくつ動いていて、今月いくら入る予定で、未回収はいくらあって、目標にどれくらい届いているのか。それを知るためにスプレッドシート・メモ・カレンダー・会計ソフトを行き来する——この"あちこち見に行く"手間そのものをなくしたい、と思いました。

なぜ作ろうと思ったか

私自身が映像制作のフリーランスで、まさにこの悩みの当事者でした。

夜や休日に、制作ではなく請求書づくりや自作スプレッドシートの更新で時間を溶かす。会計ソフトは経理に強くても案件管理はできず、Notionは自由すぎて運用が続かない。結局どのツールも、"ひとりで会社を回すクリエイター"のためには作られていませんでした。

だったら、自分がずっと欲しかったツールを自分で作ろう——それがCompassの出発点です。

もうひとつの後押しがAIでした。面倒な入力や下書きは、話しかけるだけでAIに肩代わりしてもらえる時代になった。「この案件のタスクを作って」「この会社をクライアントに追加して」と言うだけで済むなら、事務作業に奪われていた時間を、また制作に戻せる。その手応えが、開発を続ける理由になりました。

こだわったところ

ひとりで完結できること。 登録したその日から使えることを大事にしました。
数字が"判断"に使える形で見えること。 ただ記録するのではなく、今月の売上・未収金・目標達成率・入金予定が開いた瞬間に分かる。次の一手を決められるダッシュボードを目指しました。
面倒はAIに任せられること。 Cockpitに話しかけるだけでタスク・案件・書類の下書きが完成する。慣れないツール操作に時間を取られないように。
クリエイターの実務に寄り添うこと。 案件カテゴリ、ポートフォリオ公開、映像・写真・デザインの現場感。汎用ツールでは拾いきれない部分を大切にしました。
大切な情報を安心して預けられること。 顧客情報も売上データもフリーランスの命綱。セキュリティを最優先に設計しています。
