Every Sunday night, I'd open Excel and line up dinners from Monday through Sunday. Below that, I'd write out the necessary ingredients one by one. Then I'd either print it or take a screenshot and head to the supermarket. This was our household's weekend routine for several years.
I wanted to stop—not because I hated the task itself. Planning meals for the week actually made weekdays considerably easier. The problem was always the same: it would break at the exact same point every week.
Thinking up menus isn't actually that difficult. The grueling part was extracting ingredients from the decided menu, consolidating duplicates, and rewriting everything into a shopping list.
As long as I did this by hand, busy weeks would always get skipped. And in those skipped weeks, I'd inevitably buy extra things at the supermarket and end up throwing away what I couldn't use.
In other words, what troubled me wasn't "what to cook," but rather "connecting what I'd decided to the shopping." (Menu Cart) is an app I made to automate just that one point.
1. The menu comes first; the shopping list follows automatically afterward
I didn't create a screen for manually writing shopping lists. When you enter dinners from Monday through Sunday, ingredients automatically gather and become your shopping list. Identical ingredients show their quantities combined. By fixing the order, the task of "making a list" itself disappeared.
2. Once you've created a dish, keep it along with its ingredients
I thought it was strange that deciding on a menu took the same amount of time every single week, so I made it so registered dishes remain in your history complete with ingredients. Choose "Pork Ginger Stir-fry" and 300g of pork loin and one onion come with it. The more you use it, the faster menu planning becomes.
3. Don't let data leave the device
What your family eats is fairly private information. No account registration, no servers—it runs completely offline. But since I'm worried about losing it when changing phones, I included automatic iCloud backup only.
Forgotten purchases became almost nonexistent. Since the list is auto-generated from the menu, there's no room for the mistake of "forgetting to write something down" in the first place.
Wasting food also decreased. Only items with a reason to buy them appear on the list.
And Sunday night's task got about 10 minutes shorter. It's not a dramatic change, but since it's weekly, it adds up.
Recipe suggestions, SNS-style sharing, and managing breakfast and lunch aren't included. They'd be convenient, but the more features I add, the further away the most important flow—"deciding on seven dinners"—becomes.
For now, I'm prioritizing subtraction over addition.
I've added a widget so you can check today's and tomorrow's menus, so next I want to improve the experience while shopping.
If you use it and find something feels tedious, please let me know. Since this is personal development, it goes straight into the next update.
