I wanted to leave the travel experiences that shaped me as vivid memories in the footprints of my life. I wrote about the background behind creating the iPhone app "Tabi Note," which allows you to look back on photos and places on a map, and the true value that became apparent as I continued developing it.

It is often said that people are shaped by the people they meet, the books they read, and their travel experiences.
For me too, travel is not merely entertainment.
New landscapes I see for the first time, the air of unfamiliar lands, the people and cultures I encounter in those places. Before and after a trip, my way of seeing and feeling things sometimes changes slightly.
Despite being such an important experience that shapes my life, as time passes, I'm surprised at how much I forget—what I saw, what I felt, what I was thinking at that moment.
All that remains in my hands are the photographs lined up in my camera roll.
Looking at photos, I can tell that I went to that place. However, the order in which I visited, what happened there, and how I felt at that time gradually lose their outline.
It's such a waste that the experiences that shaped me remain only as "places where I took photos."
I wanted to be able to remember not just the landscapes of my travels, but also myself at that time. I wanted to preserve the experiences that shaped me as memories with clear outlines, as one of the footprints of my life.
That's why I started creating "Travel Notes."
With typical photo apps, you can search for photos by date or location. Still, it's a bit different from the experience of reading through memories as a single trip.
Photos taken on the same trip get buried among everyday photos, and you lose track of where you went and where you came from, and what happened before and after the photos.
So with Travel Notes, I made it possible to preserve not just photos, but also the places visited, dates, notes, and companions as "one journey."
However, I didn't make it a prerequisite to keep detailed records during the trip or to constantly run GPS to capture precise movement history.
After the trip ends, you organize your memories while selecting photos. I wanted to create something where that time itself is included, allowing you to enjoy the trip once more.
When talking about a trip, the first gateway is "where did you go."
When you trace the places and photos on a map in the order you visited them, the flow of that trip comes back to you more than when you look at just a single photo.
"After going here, I stopped by that shop."
"It rained while I was walking down this street."
"The last landscape I saw left the strongest impression."
When you start from a place, the events that happened there and the emotions you felt at that time can come back to you in a chain-like manner.
For Travel Notes, the map is not merely for visualizing the places visited. It's a gateway to give outline once more to experiences that are fading.
As development progressed, I also saw anxiety about the act of "posting."
When you hear "posting," you become conscious of showing it to someone or getting reactions. There's also anxiety about travel photos and location information being unintentionally shared widely.
However, what Travel Notes wants to preserve is not travel for evaluation on social media.
It's okay to keep it just for yourself. It's okay to show it only to people you traveled with. It's okay to make public only the trips you want to be helpful to someone.
For that reason, I made it possible to choose the sharing range for each trip.
At the center of Travel Notes is not someone who will see it, but my own self looking back later.
When I first started, I was thinking of an app that organizes travel photos on a map.
However, when I lined up the recorded trips by year, it didn't look like a mere travel history—it looked like fragments of life reflecting who I was at that time.
When looking back at old trips, what I remember is not just the places.
What kind of life was I living back then. Who was I spending time with. What was I interested in, and what was I thinking about.
I think people are looking back at their trips, but in reality, they're looking back at who they were back then.
From there, the "Life Timeline" was born—a way to look back on recorded trips year by year.
One year is one chapter, and the trips experienced that year become the main text.
Travel Notes gradually changed from an app that records trips to an app where you read back your own story told through travels.
Memories won't be revisited just by being saved.
So in Travel Notes, I place equal importance on "preserving" and "meeting again."
Rather than storing records in a warehouse, we recall memories after time has passed.
Travel Notes is an app that I hope will only complete its value when my future self looks back at it.
Travel Notes was released on the App Store in June 2026, and by September, registered users exceeded 100.
It's not a large number yet. Still, the fact that something I felt I needed to create is being used by someone I've never met, and they're preserving their own travels—I feel a weight to that fact beyond the numbers.
On the other hand, I learned that an app doesn't reach people just by being made, and there are barriers even after registration before people save their first trip.
Currently, I'm improving the experience so that first-time users can smoothly save their first trip, and the flow that makes people want to add past trips.
What I'm aiming for is not a convenient app that you open only during trips.
The more trips you accumulate, the more your life unfolds. When you open it years later, you can remember not just forgotten landscapes, but also how you felt back then.
Preserving trips that used to end with just taking photos as footprints of your own life.
And someday, through travel, to meet your past self once again.
I want to continue nurturing Travel Notes as such an app.
