Nice to meet you. I'm Harenare.
I'm an ordinary engineer living with my wife and three elementary school children.
When it comes to documents I manage myself, even if they're a bit scattered, I generally know where they are.
On the other hand, I honestly haven't been able to properly keep track of notices from my children's elementary school, annual event schedules, communications from their extracurricular activities, and documents shared by my wife.
"When is the school trip again?"
"Where did I put the documents to submit to school?"
"What time does the extracurricular activity start?"
These kinds of confirmations happen frequently in our family.
So I looked for a document management tool that the family could use and that wouldn't strain our household budget.
I eventually discovered Google's family features, Google Drive, Google Calendar, and similar services.
We can save documents like PDFs that we receive digitally, and we can also share schedules with the family.
However, real households still have plenty of paper in addition to digital data.
Notices from schools and daycare centers, contracts, insurance policies, appliance warranties, documents from hospitals, and so on.
While we can manage digital documents, we haven't been able to manage paper documents well.
I felt a bit unsatisfied with that.
My initial thought wasn't to digitize all the paper documents themselves.
Rather, I thought it would be convenient if we could record digitally:
"Where in the house is that document stored?"
If we link paper documents with their actual storage locations, whenever someone in the family needs something, they won't have to ask other family members where it is every time.
Just knowing information like:
"On the living room shelf"
"In the bedroom closet"
"Inside the blue file"
would significantly reduce the effort needed to search for documents.
This was the initial spark that led me to start creating YourNarrative.
However, as I actually started thinking about it, I realized that simply recording the location wasn't enough.
When you want to check a paper notice, you ultimately have to go to the storage location to retrieve it.
Also, school notices contain information you'll want to check multiple times later—event dates, meeting times, what to bring, submission deadlines, and so on.
"When is this event again?"
"What should I bring for the school trip?"
"Where did I put the insurance documents?"
Every time we need to confirm these things, we either ask someone in the family or search through stacks of paper. It's mundane, but it surprisingly takes time.
So I thought it would be even more convenient if we could photograph paper documents with our smartphones, digitize them, and share them with the family.
Not just save the documents, but also record their actual storage locations at the same time.
If a document contains schedule information, register it in Google Calendar.
When you later look at the calendar event, you can also check the original document that the event came from.
Documents registered by one family member can be found by other family members when they need them.
I thought that with such a system, document management in the home would become a bit easier.
This is why I created YourNarrative.
I initially started developing it as a small system for my own household to use.
However, as I was building it, I realized that homes contain far more documents than I had anticipated.
Notices from schools and daycare centers, extracurricular activity announcements, insurance policies, contracts, appliance warranties, notifications from local governments.
And I'm sure our household isn't the only one struggling with managing these.
The purpose of YourNarrative isn't to organize documents perfectly.
It's to make sure that when someone in the family needs a document, they can find it.
To not forget important schedules.
To reduce the number of times we ask:
"Where is that document?"
"When is that scheduled?"
YourNarrative is being created to solve these small everyday frustrations within the home.
It's still a small service that I'm developing individually.
Precisely because of that, I'm using it with my own family and adding features one by one that I genuinely feel are necessary.
A little more ease in managing the family's documents.
I'd be happy if YourNarrative becomes a place where you can find the information you need, when you need it.
